The widget makes it clear when you are talking to AI and when to a person
Visitors see “AI assistant · You are chatting with AI, not a person.” in the widget, and they see when a human replies.
Article 50 of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) requires that people know when they are interacting with an AI system. In the aichat.md widget, a status bar always shows who is answering: the AI assistant, an operator request that has been sent or is waiting, an active human operator, or the return to AI. The bar is also announced to screen readers. Instagram, Messenger and Telegram have no such bar, so there you write in the agent’s instructions that it should say from the start that it is an AI assistant.
Before vs After aichat.md
Visitors don’t know whether a person or a program is answering, and only find out when a reply seems odd.
From the first message, the status bar says it is an AI assistant, and when an operator joins, the bar changes.
How it works in 3 steps
The visitor opens the chat
The status bar shows “AI assistant · You are chatting with AI, not a person.”
They ask for an operator
The bar shows that the request has been sent or is in the queue and that AI replies are paused.
A person replies
The bar shows “Human support active”, then announces when the conversation returns to AI.
Example messages
- “Waiting for a human” → “Your request is in the operator queue. AI replies are paused.”
- “AI assistant resumed” → “A human returned this conversation to AI.”
Frequently asked questions
Does this mean I comply with the AI Act?+
The status bar covers the notice inside the widget. Compliance also depends on things you decide, such as what you say on other channels and in your privacy policy. For a full assessment, ask a lawyer.
What about Instagram and Messenger?+
There, messages appear in Meta’s apps, without the aichat.md bar. Write in the agent’s instructions that its first reply should say it is an AI assistant.
